This year’s Scottish Design Awards nominations were announced, and Thomas Johnstone was delighted to learn that five of their previous and current projects have been included on the shortlist.

Loader Monteith and Studio SJM have been nominated for their design of the new Harmeny Learning Hub in the Education Building or Project category. Thomas Johnstone was proud to have been the main contractor on this project, which allowed Harmeny Education Trust to expand its capabilities to help children aged 14-18. Constructed with a timber frame, the highly insulated new building consists of two main sections connected via an external breezeway. Clad in Forum Smoked Branco facing bricks and European Larch, the building’s exterior will gradually weather over time to blend seamlessly with its woodland surroundings.

Harmeny Education Trust has also been nominated for the same project in the Design Awards’ Client of the Year category.

Interior Architects Significant Others are the first of two TJL projects to be named finalists in the Interior Design category. TJL was the main contractor for The Keel Houses project in Edinburgh’s Lower Gilmore Place. The team constructed and fit out the new purpose-built student accommodation building adjacent to the Union Canal in 2023, and TJL’s Manufactured Joinery division created a number of bespoke items for the ground floor amenities areas.

3D Reid’s interiors team have also been nominated in the above category for their fantastic work on the AC Hotel by Marriott, Glasgow. TJL’s Manufactured Joinery division was delighted to be contracted to create several standard and bespoke items for the new hotel, part of Chris Stewart Group’s Love Loan development, for both guest rooms and public areas.

TJL’s Manufactured Joinery client, Quaba Cosmetic Surgery and NVDC Architects earned a nomination for their independent, purpose-built Waterfront Private Hospital in the Health Building or Project category. TJL created several bespoke items for the new hospital, including two stone and Hi-Max-clad reception desks and curved LED feature wall panelling with built-in storage.

The judging panel also recognised Chris Stewart Group’s Love Loan Development in the Animation/Moving Imagery Design category with their vision for Glasgow’s newest neighbourhood. Thomas Johnstone acted as the Main Contractor for the refurbishment of 280 George Street, which now contains 12 private apartments and social darts venue, Flight Club, on the ground floor. We are also currently carrying out the internal fit-out of a 20-storey purpose-built accommodation block on Martha Street.
